Diamond Painting for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Kit
Share
Diamond painting looks complicated from the outside. Hundreds of tiny pieces. Symbols on a canvas. Multiple tools. Once you actually start, you realize it is one of the most accessible crafts there is โ and one of the most satisfying.
This guide covers everything you need to know before buying your first kit so you start with the right one and have a great first experience.
What Is Diamond Painting?
Diamond painting is a hybrid between paint-by-numbers and cross-stitch, but easier than either. You get a canvas printed with a pattern and symbols, small trays of resin "diamonds" (square or round, depending on the kit), and a stylus pen. You dip the pen tip into a wax pad, pick up a diamond, match it to the symbol on the canvas, and press it onto the adhesive surface.
Repeat until the canvas is full. Frame it. It looks like mosaic tile art that glitters under light.
That is the entire skill set. There is nothing to learn beyond that.
Full Drill vs. Partial Drill
Full drill means the entire canvas is covered with diamonds. Most kits are full drill. More meditative, more impressive when finished.
Partial drill means diamonds cover only part of the canvas โ the rest is printed. Faster to complete, but less of that all-over sparkle effect.
For beginners, full drill is the better experience. The repetition is the point.
Round Drill vs. Square Drill
Round drill diamonds are slightly easier to place โ they do not need to be perfectly aligned. Good starting point, especially for smaller or more complex pattern areas.
Square drill diamonds snap together edge-to-edge with no gaps. The finished product looks more complete and polished. Slightly more precise placement required, but the result is noticeably better.
Most experienced painters prefer square drill. If you are not sure, start with round and upgrade when you are ready.
What Size Should a Beginner Choose?
Size determines how long the project takes and how much detail the finished piece has:
- 20x30cm or 30x40cm: 3-6 hours. Good for a weekend project or testing the craft.
- 40x50cm: 8-12 hours. Most popular beginner size. Satisfying without being overwhelming.
- 50x60cm and larger: 15-30+ hours. For people who know they will love it or want a statement piece.
For your very first kit, 40x50cm is the sweet spot. Large enough to be rewarding, manageable enough to actually finish.

Tips for Your First Session
- Work in good light. Natural light or a dedicated lamp helps significantly.
- Do not peel the entire backing at once. Peel a small section, work that area, move on. The adhesive dries out if left exposed.
- Use the sorting trays. Open one color bag at a time, work that color, close it before opening the next.
- Play something in the background. Music, a podcast, a show you already know. Diamond painting pairs perfectly with passive listening.
